Step by step guide to locating the model number on your furnace filter cabinet.
Most homeowners search for their furnace model number and come up empty. The filter size is determined by the filter cabinet model, not the furnace or air handler itself. These are two different components with two different model numbers. You need the cabinet number.
| Brand | Where to Look | Label Color |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier | Inside the filter cabinet door, top right corner | White or silver |
| Lennox | Inside door or on the cabinet side panel near the hinge | Silver or yellow |
| Trane / American Standard | Inside the filter access door, usually on the frame | Silver |
| Goodman / Amana | On the exterior side of the cabinet, near the bottom | White |
| Bryant / Heil / York | Inside the filter door, on the metal frame | White or silver |
| Rheem / Ruud | On the outside panel of the filter section | Silver or black |
On older systems the label may have faded or fallen off. In that case, remove your current filter and read the size printed on its cardboard frame. The size printed on the filter is the nominal size (e.g., 20x25x1). You can also measure the filter slot opening with a tape measure and round to the nearest inch to get the nominal size.
