Finding Your Cabinet Model

Step by step guide to locating the model number on your furnace filter cabinet.

The Cabinet Model is Not the Furnace Model

Most homeowners search for their furnace model number and come up empty. The filter size is determined by the filter cabinet model, not the furnace or air handler itself. These are two different components with two different model numbers. You need the cabinet number.

Step by Step: Finding the Number

  1. Locate your filter cabinet. This is the box attached to your furnace or air handler where the filter slides in. On most systems it is a rectangular metal box between the return air duct and the furnace blower.
  2. Open the access door. The door is usually held by a latch, a screw, or just pressure. Pull it open to expose the filter slot.
  3. Look at the label on the inside frame. You are looking for a model number that starts with letters followed by numbers. Common formats: HCC16-28, GAPAAXCC1625, TFM210B0FR0, LB-79955F.
  4. Photograph it. The label can be hard to read in a dim utility room. Take a photo with your phone before closing the door.
  5. Search it on FilterSize411. Enter the model number in the search box on our homepage to find the exact filter size, dimensions, and replacement options.

If There is No Label

On older systems the label may have faded or fallen off. In that case, remove your current filter and read the size printed on its cardboard frame. The size printed on the filter is the nominal size (e.g., 20x25x1). You can also measure the filter slot opening with a tape measure and round to the nearest inch to get the nominal size.
