How to Replace Your HVAC Filter
Replacing your air filter is a simple DIY task that can save you money and improve air quality.
Tools You'll Need
- New replacement filter (correct size)
- Flashlight (optional, but helpful)
- Vacuum (to clean the filter compartment)
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Turn Off Your System
Always turn off your furnace or HVAC system before replacing the filter.
Step 2: Locate the Filter
Find your filter compartment. It's usually located:
- Inside the basement near the furnace
- In a wall-mounted cabinet
- In the attic (less common)
- Outside the home (in some systems)
Step 3: Remove the Old Filter
Carefully slide out the old filter. Note the direction the arrow is pointing (airflow direction).
Step 4: Clean the Compartment
Use a vacuum to remove dust and debris from the filter compartment.
Step 5: Install the New Filter
Slide the new filter in with the arrow pointing in the same direction as the old filter. The arrow indicates airflow direction.
Step 6: Secure and Test
Make sure the filter is fully seated. Turn your system back on and listen for normal operation.
