Deeper filters last longer but require a media cabinet. Here's how to decide.
A 1-inch filter has roughly 75 square inches of filter media. A 4-inch filter has nearly 300 square inches. More media means more surface area to capture particles, slower clogging, and longer replacement intervals. The tradeoff is that 4-inch filters require a media cabinet installed in your ductwork, which a 1-inch filter slot cannot accommodate.
| Feature | 1-Inch Filter | 4-Inch Filter |
|---|---|---|
| Filter Media Surface Area | ~75 sq inches | ~300 sq inches |
| Typical Replace Interval | 30 to 90 days | 6 to 12 months |
| Airflow Restriction | Higher per unit area | Lower (more media) |
| Cost Per Filter | $5 to $25 | $20 to $60 |
| Annual Filter Cost | $20 to $75 | $20 to $60 |
| Requires Cabinet | No | Yes |
| Best MERV Range | 8 to 13 | 8 to 16 |
Only if your furnace has a media cabinet or if you have one installed. You cannot simply slide a 4-inch filter into a 1-inch slot. A media cabinet installation costs $200 to $400 depending on your system and ductwork. If you are spending $60 or more per year on 1-inch filters and want fewer change intervals, the upgrade often pays for itself within 3 to 5 years.
