1-Inch vs 4-Inch Filters

Deeper filters last longer but require a media cabinet. Here's how to decide.

The Core Difference

A 1-inch filter has roughly 75 square inches of filter media. A 4-inch filter has nearly 300 square inches. More media means more surface area to capture particles, slower clogging, and longer replacement intervals. The tradeoff is that 4-inch filters require a media cabinet installed in your ductwork, which a 1-inch filter slot cannot accommodate.

Can You Upgrade to a 4-Inch Filter?

Only if your furnace has a media cabinet or if you have one installed. You cannot simply slide a 4-inch filter into a 1-inch slot. A media cabinet installation costs $200 to $400 depending on your system and ductwork. If you are spending $60 or more per year on 1-inch filters and want fewer change intervals, the upgrade often pays for itself within 3 to 5 years.

When to Stick With 1-Inch

  • Your system uses a standard 1-inch slot and you do not want the cabinet installation cost
  • You prefer to check and change filters frequently as part of your maintenance routine
  • Your HVAC contractor recommends against the upgrade for your specific system
